BIOGRAPHY

S.E. (Scott Eastman) Andrews (b. 2003) is a composer, conductor, writer, and vocalist whose music seeks to foster connection through expressions of the inner-world while confronting our shared reality. His work is intensely personal and always addressing modernity, described as “deeply empathetic…driven by abstract narrative” with a foundation rooted in classical traditions that operates with radical independence of form, topic, and tone. Influenced by various idiosyncratic artistic voices—from the poetry of Walt Whitman to the humor and transcendentalism of Charles Ives, and a fascination with the complexities of American identity—his work employs a striking coloristic and timbral language derived from his own synesthetic perceptions that prioritizes nuance and narrative.

A singer for all his life, he has strong ties to the choral tradition and has traveled across the world as a member of the renowned Delaware Choral Scholars. He is also a lover of song, and has enjoyed frequent commissions by members of the University of Delaware Voice Area. A notable project resulting from these commissions is the in-progress Threnody For Sara, a quasi-biographical song cycle depicting the declining mental health and eventual suicide of American poet Sara Teasdale through settings of her final poetic works.

Dedicated the performance of new music, Andrews is a co-founder of the Outward Collective, a composer-performer collective which exists to advance new music of and for our time that engages with and contributes to the global musical community, alongside fellow composers Alejandro Lobo and Robbie Strauss.

As a conductor and vocalist, Andrews has led premieres of both his own works as well as those of his peers while studying at the University of Delaware, where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in composition under the instruction of Yoshiaki Onishi and Rachael Marie Smith. He has also studied composition with Sarah Rimkus and conducting with Paul Head.
